Historians highlight Mundaka as one of the most important places in the Señorío de Bizkaia (Domain of Bizkaia), because the town was the birthplace of the JAUN ZURIA, the first Lord of Bizkaia, and son of a Scottish princess, who arrived on our shores fleeing from the English King. The name of the town is Danish in origin, because there is evidence that the Vikings visited it around the year 900. According to the history of the Señorio de Bizkaia, Mundaka is the oldest of the Parish Assemblies of Bizkaia, which is why it used to occupy the first seat in the General Assembly of Bizkaia.
The streets forming its old quarter radiate from the harbour. This is where its noble past can be felt in its houses with their coats of arms, and in its medieval towers interspersed with the fishermen's traditional houses, which were always built looking out to sea.
Mundaka's coat of arms consists of an oak vert on a gold field and at the foot of it a sable passant wolf, with the edges of the whole in chess squares of gules and argent.
